Academic Achievement Programs & Services Do you need additional help with your coursework? Butler's Academic Achievement Center offers coursework by appointment, or online, in the areas of math, science, language arts, study skills, stress management, and career planning. Don't hesitate to get that extra help that will allow you to achieve your goals. Academic Achievement Programs and Services has a mission to help meet the diverse needs of Butler’s students. These include a variety of college credit courses, developmental courses, peer tutoring, college orientation, leadership studies and other programs and services that assist students in accomplishing their academic, career, and life goals. 1. Academic Achievement Centers: Both college credit courses and developmental courses are offered in the Butler Academic Achievement Centers (see direct links to each campus AAC at the right side of this page). Courses are offered in business, language arts, personal development, biological vocabulary, and in legal and medical terminology. Most courses are taught in the independent study (IS) format, but some are taught in face to face and online formats. 3. Butler Student Connect Butler Community College provides a one credit hour course - Student Connect (OR102) to assist our new first year students develop academic and life success skills. Student Connect is required for all first time college students who are taking at least 12 credit hours. The class is designed to help students learn Butler academic rules and procedures, use Butlerresources most efficiently, improve study skills to a college level and continuosly improve skills for life after Butler, dealing with diversity, time & priorities management techniques, academic ethics, self-assessment, also developed are higher level time, money, goal setting, transfer requirements, how to better plan for change, and how to plan for continuous personal improvement.
This course ( OR102) will help students learn to navigate the Butler Pipeline web portal, use Butler email, and money, other helpful Butler resources. An introduction to interpersonal skills and class activities to meet new friends and study partners is also a part of the Student Connect course. Student Connect (OR102) provides a general introduction to the Butler Learning PACT Skills concept and with an instructor who can successfully mentor the new student through the first semesters of college. 4. Leadership Studies Program: The Leadership Studies Program is designed to develop leadership skills through academic courses and practical experience. The Butler Leadership Certificate is earned by completing the four leadership courses: Exploring Leadership, The Emerging Leader, Team and Community Building, and Leadership Development. Beginning Fall 2008, Butler will also accept BA210 or LS210 as electives to complete the 12 credit hour LS certificate. Butler students are also encouraged to gain valuable leadership experience by joining campus student organizations (Ambassadors, Chess Club, Philosohy Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Senate, etc. ) and applying for student leadership positions. These types of experience look good on your resume, but more importantly, leadership experience and certification develops valuable skills for future your career challenges. Service-Learning:Butler instructors are encouraged to incorporate service learning options into their classes as much as possible as community partners are willing and available. Resources and services to facilitate incorporating service learning into instruction are provided through the Academic Achievement Programs and Services Department, and by numerous Butler County Agencies. Service Learning is similar to "community service," but must have a strong academic component and a close connection between the service project and a student's academic interests. |
