Credentialing for Drug Abuse Counselors


Effective January 1, 2004, individuals seeking AAPS Counselor credentialing shall:

  • Have completed an Associates, Bachelors or Masters degree from an accredited
    college or university; and
  • Have completed a minimum of 27 academic credit hours at an AAPS approved
    educational institution, such as a college or university or other designated educational
    institution. (At Butler Community College, these 27 hours translate to 32 credit hours).

An individual seeking an AAPS Counselor Assistant Credential shall provide
documentation verifying:

  • Completion of 6 academic credit hours in the addiction specific certification courses
  • Enrollment in an AAPS approved college to comply with the 27 credit hour course
    requirements
  • A written Supervisory Plan and Agreement with an AAPS Credentialed Counselor that
    consists of:
    1. The goals and objectives of the supervision
    2. The means to determine and evaluate progress toward the goals
    3. The date the Supervisory Plan and agreement was entered
    4. The anticipated term of the agreement by either party
    5. The process for the Supervisory Plan to be integrated into the applicant's academic
      course work to include the completion of a minimum of 6 credit hours per year
      within 4 years
  • Completion of or documentation of a plan to complete nine (9) continuing education units (CEUs) within nine (9) months from date of hire in each of these content areas:
    1. Three (3) hours in ethics,
    2. Three (3) hours in confidentiality
    3. Three (3) hours in infectious disease
