AH 105 First Responder: Emergency Medical Care Training Course |
4 hours credit. Prerequisite: 17 years of age, current on immunizations. This course has been designed to provide the student with skills and knowledge to provide basic life support to victims of emergencies and to prevent further injury. The objectives are based on the guidelines of the United States Department of Transportation, National Standard Curriculum; and the Kansas Statute Authorized Activities for the First Responder. |
AH 110 Emergency Medial Technician-Basic |
8 hours credit. Prerequisite: 7 years of age, current on immunizations. Students must also enroll in AH 212. This course addresses the information and techniques currently considered to be the responsibilities of the EMT according the United States Department of Transportation, National Standard curriculum and the Kansas Statute authorized Activities for the EMT. The student will learn pre-hospital treatment of traumatic and medical emergencies. |
AH 113 Activity Director Certifications |
3 hours credit.This course meets the requirements for activity director as approved by the Kansas State Department of Health and Environment. The student will learn to develop, implement, evaluate and document activities for residents in adult care facilities under the direction of a registered occupational therapist consultant. |
AH 115 Social Service Designee Certification |
3 hours credit. This course meets the requirements for social service designee, as approved by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The student will learn to develop and implement a social service plan for residents in adult care facilities under the direction of a licensed social worker. |
AH 116 Activity Director/Social Service Designee |
4 hours credit. This class gives an overview of the bio-psychosocial aging process, common health problems of the elderly, health care delivery issues and an understanding of the dying process in the elderly. This program will discuss the role of the activity and social service department in resident care, the health care team concept, communication skills, regulatory standards, protocols, conflict resolution and management principles. |
AH 117 Home Health Aide Certification |
2 hours credit. Prerequisite: AH 122 with a C or better, Certified Nurse Aide for Kansas Nursing Homes. Home health aides provide basic health care services to individuals in their own home, under the supervision of a registered nurse. After successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to take the Kansas Home Health Aide Certification test. Classroom instruction includes topics on organization and function for home health agencies; role of home health aide; family reaction to stress, death and disability; reaction of children to family illness and stress; characteristics of mental health; indications of family abuse; caring for a new baby in the home; and food preparation in the home. |
AH 120 Certified Medication Aide |
5 hours credit. Prerequisite: AH 122 with a C or better, Certified Nurse Aide for Kansas Nursing Homes. Classroom and clinical experience provide the student with the skill necessary to administer oral and topical medications in a safe and accurate manner in an adult care home. At completion of the course the student is eligible to take the Kansas Nursing Home Medication Aide test. |
AH 122 Certified Nurse Aide |
| 5 hours credit. Prerequisite: This course follows guidelines of the Kansas State Department of Health and Environment, and prepares the student to take the Kansas Certified Nurse Aide examination and work in Kansas Nursing Homes. Course work is classroom and clinical experience in the nursing homes and includes basic nursing skills and topics on aging |
AH 123 Certified Medication Aide Update |
| 1 hour credit. Prerequisite: AH 122 and AH 120 with a C or better. THis course includes an update and a review of basic principles and skills essential for the administration of medication in Kansas Nursing Homes. Topics include scope of practice of the certified medication aide, drug abuse, pharmacokinetics of new drugs, and communication skills. |
AH 124 Rehabilitative Aide |
| 2 hours credit. Prerequisite: AH 122 with a C or better, Certified Nurse Aide for Kansas Nursing Homes. THis course provides the nurse aide with skills necessary to perform rehabilitation and restorative procedures in adult care homes under the supervision of a registered physical therapist. |
AH 130 Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals |
| 0.5 hour credit. Following the current guidelines for the American Heart Association's: Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers, students will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care. American Heart Association standards are revised and updated as indicated by scientific data and clinical experience. |
AH 135 Community First Aide |
0.5 hour credit. A complete First Aid/CPR program that will provide the students with the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies until advanced help arrives. This course follows the current standards of first aid (meets all first aid requirements by industry) and according to the guidelines of the American Heart Association. |
MT 140 Therapeutic Massage I |
| 5 hours credit. In this course, students learn the foundations of therapeutic massage. Class time will be spent integrating anatomy/physiology and first aid with discussion, technique instruction, and hands-on practice. The student will gain experience in assessment skills, Swedish/therapeutic massage techniques and learn proper use of therapeutic massage supplies and equipment, how to establish client/therapist rapport, and the importance of contraindications. |
MT 145 Reflexology |
| 3 hours credit. In this course students examine the ancient massage practice which correlates specific points on the hands, feet and ears to the major systems of the body. Clinical practice indications and contraindications are emphasized. Students perform reflexology massage techniques and create a routine of reflexology massage. Development of reflexology practice is explored. |
AH 150 Topics on Aging for Long Term Care |
| This course follows guidelines of Kansas Department of Health & Enviorment to update the Nurse Aide Certificate. It is for the CNA who has not worked for 2 years, or any CNA needing a refresher course. |
AH 205 Medical Records for Long Term Care |
| 3 hours credit. This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills needed to organize a medical records department under the supervision of an Accredited Medical Records Professional in a long-term care setting, including terminology and documentation requirements, confidentiality, legal aspects, and rules and regulations of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. |
AH 210 Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate |
| 4 hours credit. Prerequisite: AH 110 and AH 212 with a C or better. THis course will provide advanced training in caring for patients in the pre-hospital setting. Classroom, lab and clinical experience will provide instruction in fluid therapy and initiation of appropriate invasive and non-invasive therapy according to pre-established protocols. Students may take the EMT-I state certification examination after successfully completing the course. |
AH 212 Emergency Medical Technician-Skills Evaluation |
| 2 hours credit. Prerequisite: 17 years of age, current on immunizations. Students must also enroll in AH 110. It will help prepare students to perform basic EMT skills; and upon successful completion of the course, allow them to sit the examination for certification process in the state of Kansas. Students will be prepared to treat traumatic and medical emergencies encountered by EMTs. This course can also be used for continuing education hours for the EMT. |
AH 214 Emergency Medical Technician - Standard Defibrillation (EMT-D) |
| 4 hours credit. Prerequisites: AH 110 and AH 212 with a C or better. The applicant must be an Emergency Medical Technician in good standing with the State of Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services. EMT-D is an advanced class for the EMT, providing the student with knowledge and skills to perform standard defibrillation on the patient with a life threatening arrhythmia. The student will learn basic cardiology, arrhythmia recognition and use of cardiac monitor. |
AH 220 ECG Interpretation with Clinical Application |
| 2 hours credit. Prerequisites: Instructor approval. A systematic approach to interpretation of electro cariogram rhythms including patient presentation, nursing care and pharmacotherapy. Rhythms covered include sinus, atrial, junctional and ventricular. Atrioventricular blocks, bundle branch blocks and pacemaker therapy are also covered. |
AH 225 Operator Training for Assisted Living |
| 2 hours credit. This course will prepare the student to be an operator of assisted living facilities, residential health care facilities, home plus and adult day care facilities. After successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to take the state exam approved by Kansas Department of Health and Environment on the principles of assisted living. |
AH 230 Basis for Spiritual Care |
| 1 hour credit. This course will explore the basis for the role of spirituality in health care. The historical foundation of spirituality in health care will be discussed, including a look at spirituality across various cultures and recognition of the effects of myth, religion, and gender in spiritual decision making. |

AH 232 Life Issues and Spiritual Care |
| 1 hour credit. Prerequisites: AH 230 and AH 231 with a C or better. The role of spirituality within ethical frameworks will be considered. The student will review spiritual assessment tools and select the tool for use in his/her practice setting. The spiritual needs of individual experiencing illness and death will be discussed. |
AH 233 Spiritual Care in Grief and Loss |
| 1 hour credit. Prerequisites: AH 230 and AH 231with a C or better. This course will explore the spiritual care of the individual experiencing the loss of a significant nature. Included will be the individuals response to mass casualty loss. |
MT 240 Therapeutic Massage II |
| 5 hours credit. Prerequisite: MT 140 with a C or better. In this course, the student will use assessment skills to determine appropriate therapeutic procedure. Class time will be spent integrating active and passive joint movement, deep tissue techniques and energy work into the fundamental therapeutic massage with technique instruction , demonstration and hands-on practice. Students will gain experience in clinical based massage, athletic massage, chair massage and the modalities of hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. Stress reduction techniques are explored. Business management and entrepreneurial skills are introduced. |
MT 241 Sports Massage |
| 3 hours credit. This course will enable the student to assess athletic and non-athletic clients and properly apply specific massage techniques, theory, philosophy and practice of sports massage. Classroom presentations focus on topics of injury, pathology and specialized clinical methods for relief of activity altering injuries/complaints, dysfunction, trigger points, and common injuries of each muscle palpated. Students practice clinical application of sports massage for common athletic complaints of the upper and lower extremities. |
AH 243 Pathophysiology for Careers in Health Care |
| 3 hours credit. In this course, the student will develop an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of cellular changes, inflammation and healing, and immune responses. The student will also explore the pathophysiology or common disease disorders in the major body systems. |
