Admissions/Enrollment/Classes
1 - How do I register for Computer Information Technology courses?
You may register in person at one of the Butler locations or online. From the BCC homepage you can link to maps to from the "Our Campuses. " The "Admissions Information" link takes you to information about how to apply and enroll.

2 - What courses are you offering for next semester? When and where are they?
From the BCC homepage, click on "Courses@Butler" to go to our interactive schedule. You can find which courses are scheduled and search for courses by day/time/location. Courses are listed as IN, not as CIT.

3 - I think I might like computer programming, but I'm not sure. Which class should I take?
This online sample computer aptitude test might help you:
http://www.computeraptitude.com/sample_cat.html . Our IN105 Introduction to Programming is a good starting place for a prospective programmer.

4 - The courses listed in CIT are very confusing. What do all those names mean?
If your Java Beans are blending with your Java Script, and HTML, XML and DHTML become one in your mind, while routers and servers remind you of restaurant wait staff, clear your head with Course Technology's IT Glossary. A one-stop shop for all of your defining needs, this tool will be updated as new technology continues to emerge.

Hardware
This document addresses frequently asked questions pertaining to the computer systems used by the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department.

1 - What equipment and platforms are available for students in the CIT programs?
The CIT labs are all in the 5000 building at Butler of Andover. The dominant operating system is Windows XP. You have access to the labs during your scheduled classes and during some scheduled guided labs (labs that have an instructor present). Each lab has a door schedule that specifies its availability.

2 - Which Butler network computers are available via remote access?
None.

3 - Do I need to own my own personal computer?
Many students own their own computer, and this has obvious advantages in terms of convenience. However, you are not required to have your own computer. The College has labs that are open for many hours during the week for you to use. Lab computers have the software you will need in various classes. Some computer labs are devoted to computer information exclusively, while others are meant for the general student population. Thus, some labs have specialized software installed that is not available in every lab.

Pipeline/E-Mail
Every Butler student has an account with Pipeline, the college's intranet. If you need information on how to access your account, click on the "helpdesk@butler" link from the college home page and fill out a help request.

1 - What is my correct e-mail address?
Your Butler e-mail address is username@butlercc.edu, replacing "username" with your Pipeline assigned username.

2 - Who can I talk to about problems or ask for further help?
Click on the "helpdesk@butler" link from the college home page and fill out a help request.

Jobs/Career

1 - How can I learn more about CIT-related professions?
Here are some good reference sites to try:

Sessions Online School of Design Job Resources
http://www.sessions.edu/career_center/index.html
A Day in the Life
http://www.course.com/careers/dayinthelife/default.cfm

At A Day in the Life, experts in exciting IT professions share with you what a typical day in their shoes is like. Learn from someone in the field exactly what it is like to be a programmer, network administrator and more.

2 - What about job listings?
The college maintains local job listings--find out more at the "Career Services" link from the Butler home page.
If you are looking for corporate job, it's always a good idea to choose some companies you would like to work for and focus your job-hunting efforts on them. Many companies post job listings on their own sites.
Remember to check the online jobs boards. At Careerpath.com, you can search help wanted ads from newspapers around the country and by keyword. http://www.careerpath.com/
The Monster Board is a good site for U.S. and international jobs. http://www.monster.com/ . Another good site is www.jobsearchusa.org.

3 - What's the outlook for CIT-related professions?
You can get up-to-date answers at CareerInfoNet , a great source for regional employment trends and data.

Software

1 - Can I get free or low-cost software?
Students and faculty associated with some of the CIT courses may be eligible for free and reduced price Microsoft software. Check with your instructor for details.
Students and faculty are also eligible for reduced cost software from many publishers who support learning by offering academic pricing. This software can be purchased through the college bookstore or through various online academic resellers such as SW Express. You will be required to provide proof of college affiliation. You can find significant savings on a variety of software, including popular digital media software from Macromedia and Adobe.
