Tuition Waivers

Technical Education Tuition Waiver (Excel in CTE)

In 2012, the Kansas State Senate passed Senate Bill 155 (Excel in CTE), which authorizes Butler Community College to waive the cost of tuition for high school juniors and seniors who meet residency requirements for enrollment in any tiered career technical course. Textbooks, program fees and any other additional fees may apply.

How can you determine if a class complies with Excel in CTE?

Use the interactive course schedule to search by schedule type for "KS CTE Initiative" for a listing of eligible courses.

How do students apply for admission to Butler?

There are four requirements for students to take courses for credit.

  1. Must be classified as a junior or senior by the standards where the student attends high school.
  2. Have a High School/Home School Release Form signed by the high school principal certifying the student is at least a sophomore. This form should be turned into the Registrar's Office before enrollment takes place. Butler requires only one permission form per academic year, but individual high schools may require one each semester.
  3. Meet placement score requirements (ACT, SAT or ASSET/COMPASS). Scores must be certified on the High School/Home School Release Form prior to submission to the Registrar's Office.
  4. Must be classified as a gifted student in his/her freshman level of high school. A copy of the Individual Education Program (IEP) and a High School/Home School Release Form signed by the high school principal certifying IEP, must be turned into the Registrar's Office before enrollment takes place.

High school students can follow the steps lined out in the Enrollment Checklist to be admitted to Butler.

Do students have to declare a major?

No, high school students do not declare a major while in high school and enrolling in college courses.

Does Excel in CTE cover textbooks and supplies?

No, these expenses are the responsibility of the student. Excel in CTE covers the cost of tuition and limited fees.

Are students enrolling in classes under Excel in CTE required to take placement tests?

High school students need to follow all College policies and procedures and meet placement score requirements (ACT, SAT or ASSET/COMPASS). Scores must be certified on the High School/Home School Release Form prior to submission to the Registrar's Office. If students do not meet the ACT score requirements and a placement test is required, please refer to Placement Testing.

Do high school counselors contact Butler advisors when a student wants to take advantage of Excel in CTE?

No, the high school counselor does not need to contact the College on behalf of the student for them to take advantage of the waiver. Students simply need to follow admission, testing and enrollment procedures.

Do Excel in CTE students wanting to enroll need to wait until the currently enrolled students have selected their courses?

High school students who plan to enroll in a course taught on a Butler campus will enroll according to semester enrollment dates. They do not have to wait for college-level students to enroll first. Students must be enrolled prior to the first day of class. Students are not allowed to enroll in a course after the class has met.
