Common Essay Assignments - Fall 2003/Spring 2004

English Composition I

It has been said that many of our perceptions about life are incorrect. In an essay of 500 words or more, what three perceptions have you changed your mind about in the last year?

Administered during the 10th Week of the course. Turn in two non-graded essays (copies) from each of your Composition I classes to your lead instructor.

English Composition II

Using a contemporary issue, write a persuasive essay of 500 words or more which integrates a minimum of two sources, one found through an electronic database and one found in hardcopy. The final draft of the essay must be typed or produced by electronic word processing.

Administered during the 10th Week of the course. Turn in two non-graded essays (copies) from each of your Composition II classes to your lead instructor.

Introduction To Literature I

Directions: Choosing either a short story or poem that we have discussed in class (or one that you found was interesting as you read through the selections in the text) write an essay of 500 words or more on the following topic.

Think of someone you know (or someone you can imagine) whose attitude toward literature in general is dislike. Suggest to that person a particular work that that he or she should read. Explain your reasons why by making specific references to at least three literary elements (setting, characterization or persona, theme, voice, figurative language, imagery, irony, etc. ) Point out how you find the work to be interesting and relevant. The final draft of the essay must be typed or produced by electronic word processing.

Administered during the 10th Week of the course. Turn in two non-graded essays (copies) from each of your Intro. To Literature classes to your lead instructor.
