210 Laboratory Operation – Topics covered: Laboratory Calculations (percentages, proportions, exponents), measurements, concentrations and dilutions, solution preparation, technical writing, graphing, oral presentations, regulatory agencies, notebooks and documentation, personal and workplace issues.

226 Laboratory Safety – Topics covered: Personal protective equipment, laboratory safety equipment and its use, chemical safety, spills/clean-up, centrifuge safety, biosafety hoods and their operation, and ultra-cold safety.

250/251 Biotechnology Techniques – Topics covered: Macro and Micro-pipetting, equipment testing and validation, reagent preparation, sterile technique, laboratory notebooks and experiment documentation, and proper equipment use including Centrifuges, hoods, pH meters balances, water purification equipment, autoclaves,

Agarose and SDS-PAGE Electrophoresis, and working with animals.

260/261 Molecular Techniques – Grow bacteria, purify DNA, transform cells (inserting new DNA into cells), cloning, cutting of DNA (using enzymes to break DNA in specific places), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) (making many copies of sections of DNA), and Electrophoresis of DNA (separating DNA pieces by size).

270/271 Cell Culture Techniques – Topics include: Sterile culture technique, growth media, culture several kinds of animal cells, plot growth curves of cell cultures, passage of cells, count cells, clone cells, and freeze/store cells in liquid nitrogen.

280/281 Manufacturing Techniques Lab – Topics include: producing large cultures of product-producing bacteria, purify protein products by precipitation, purify protein by size chromatography, quantify product by optical density (OD) and enzyme linked assays, and determine purity by Gel Electrophoresis.

290 Biotechnology Internship – Students will work in a laboratory on projects which will give the student practical experience in a job related setting.
