Print Journalism

Write like the truth depends on it.

Let’s get the elephant out of the room. Print is not dead. A trip to the bookstore or to your mailbox will provide ample evidence of that. But more importantly, writing and reporting are not dead. The internet is proof of that. Ask any print journalist who has also written for online media, and they will tell you that the same skills are required to write for digital outlets as are used to fill the columns of the morning paper.

A tradition of excellence in student publications.

Of course, the best way to learn how to get a story and write it is assignment by assignment. That’s why our Associate degree program focuses on putting you to work as a writer for our two print publications, the bi-monthly Lantern newspaper and The Grizzly, a glossy, full-color magazine published three times a year.

The largest circulating community college newspaper in Kansas, the award-winning Lantern is published entirely by students and has earned a reputation for engaging editorial content and accurate reporting. The Grizzly features longer form pieces and has earned its staff multiple Journalist of the Year Awards from the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press.

Real-world instruction.

Your instructors will be seasoned professionals who take the time to give you the full benefit of their experience as reporters, editors and photojournalists. You’ll collaborate with your fellow students in the newsroom atmosphere of our dedicated computer labs that are equipped with the latest desktop publishing software.

There are scholarships available for students who work on our publications, and you don’t have to be a Journalism major to apply. If you love to write and you think reporters are still what the truth needs to survive, there’s a desk in Butler’s Print Journalism production room with your name on it.
