Designing and Developing an Web Based Course

Registration is now open for the summer and fall 2007 sessions.

Designing and Developing an Online Course is a 5 week course offered by the Instructional Technology Department  to faculty who are developing a new Butler Online course. This course requires approximately 30-contact hours for completion. Butler participants who complete the course will earn 30 CTE professional development points.

Prerequisites for admission to Designing and Developing an Online Course:

Successful completion of this online course is required if you plan to develop a new Web course or a new blended course for Butler Community College.

This course is delivered completely online using ANGEL – the course management system Butler uses for all online instruction. Each session is limited to 20 “students”. You will not have to meet face to face. All work may be conveniently completed in your office or at home. Activities are assigned for each unit but may be completed on your time schedule. Mid-week and end-of -week deadlines do apply to unit assignments.

The purpose of this course is twofold:

  • to teach the steps involved in good instructional design
  • to provide hands-on experience with the ANGEL course management system

Five main topics are introduced in the course:

  • Planning Your Course: From Course Outline to Classroom Practice
  • Butler Syllabus: Road Map to Learning and Course Contract
  • Creating & Managing Engaging Content:  Creating Content Pages, Links, & Settings
  • Using Assessment Tools: Quizzes, Surveys, and Dropbox Assignments
  • Managing the Course

This is a project oriented workshop. When you have successfully completed this course your first unit of study will be ready to go!

The Instructional Technology Department offers the course 3 times per year:

  • Fall 2008: September 22 - October 26
  • Spring 2009: to be announced
  • Summer 2009: to be announced
