Activity Scholarships - Humanities and Fine Arts Division
Courses in the Humanities and Fine Arts enable students to create, to communicate their ideas and talents, to interpret the ideas and creativity of others, to develop critical-thinking skills, and to appreciate the arts and humanities.
Activity Scholarships covering costs of books and tuition (equivalent to that paid by Kansas residents) are offered in Mass Communications, Music, Butler Community College Dance Team, Academic Challenge Team, and Theatre. Endowed scholarships are offered in Art. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of auditions and interviews scheduled in the Spring prior to the following school year. Occasionally, new scholarships are awarded during the Fall for the following spring semester. Awardees need not major in the field for which the scholarship is granted. Auditions and interviews are arranged by contacting the activity director (see below) or the Division (phone 316-322-3325/3326;

The Concert Choir is required of all scholarship students. Ensembles include the Chamber Singers, featuring vocal jazz, madrigal and chamber literature; The Headliners and the Sophisticated Ladies, two groups performing spirited, choreographed, showchoir music; and other smaller male and female ensembles. Public performances are frequent.
Instrumental Music (Contact Roger Lewis, 316-322-3117) - Membership in the Butler Community College Concert band is conditioned primarily on instrumentation needs..The 17-19 piece jazz ensemble and the 9 to 10 piece jazz and commercial styles workshop band are selected by audition. A pep band plays for all home football and basketball games. Other ensembles are formed according to student interests.
Note: Multitalented students may seek a "performing arts" scholarship which affords the opportunity to focus on more than a single talent (ie. instrumental and vocal, or dance and theatre, or vocal and keyboard, etc. )
Performance/Technical (Contact Bob Peterson, 316-322-3261) Offering one of the state's most unique programs on the community college level, the department presents four productions within the academic year--a major Broadway musical; a children's theatre show; an innovative restaging of a classic piece of theatre; and when available, the premier of an original script by a resident playwright. Scholarships are open to performers as well as technicians (lighting, sound, set design/construction, stage management, costuming, etc. ).
