Preparing your computer for Butler Online courses

Your Internet browser is your connection to your Butler Online courses. It is very important that you use a browser that is compatible with ANGEL. Regardless of whether you use a PC or Macintosh computer, the Butler Online staff recommends the use of Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.com).

Once you have a compatible browser installed, the browser settings will make a critical difference. Make sure the following settings are in place before you log into ANGEL. These settings will be found under the Tools>Internet Options menu of Explorer or Tools>Options menu of Firefox.

  • Disable all ‘pop-up’ blockers on your computer. The blockers can be independent programs or incorporated into your internet browser (such as MSN, Google, Yahoo).
  • Make sure that both Java and Javascript are enabled. You will also need to have the latest version of Java installed. Go to www. java.com and download the version that is appropriate for your computer. This software is free, too.
  • Check to make sure that cookies are enabled.
  • Finally know how to to clear the cache or history of your browser.
  • Many users have a security software installed. A high level security setting may interfere with some functions of ANGEL. While using ANGEL, please lower or disable the security setting of your browser.

Spyware is a problem for many online students. To combat this problem we highly recommend that you scan your computer for spyware. You may purchase spyware removal software or there are many good free programs available. These two free programs have been helpful to many students. After downloading, installing and running these two programs be sure to restart your computer

You will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer.Go to www.adobe.com and download Adobe Reader. Be sure you download the version that is appropriate for your computer. This software is free.

Many courses are including audio and video files inside the course. To get these files to play properly, make sure you have Windows Media Player installed (it should be installed on every PC, by default). There is also a version available for the Mac. Here is how to configure the Media Player to play audio and video files in ANGEL:

  • Open the Media Player
  • Select the Library tab>More Options
  • Select the File Types tab
  • Check these four file types: Windows audio files(. .wav) WIndows video files(.avi), Movie file(mpeg), MP3 audio fie(mp3)
You may select more but these four are the most important for these purposes.
  • Now click OK.
