COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The primary objective of Images of Culture
is to provide students with an opportunity to expand their awareness and
understanding of a culture by photographing that culture.
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- observe and study (without intrusion) a different culture.
- identify the contributions that culture has made to the world community.
- define problems in the culture.
- compare/contrast the culture with his/her own culture.
- show through a visual image what is learned and observed about a culture.
- record important cultural elements on film.
Pre session
- Trip logistics
- Culture awareness
- Photographic composition mechanics
Post session
- Critique the finished photographs
- Public show
The method of instruction is "evaluated travel." The student will examine the culture as well as the photographic medium for capturing the culture. This process will enable the student to internalize the experience. The instructor uses the tools of critique, questioning, and evaluation to help the student better understand the experience.
Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Evaluation of student's work will be
based upon preparation for and participation in the shoots. The final
product is 15 presentation-quality mounted prints, which will be viewed
and critiqued during the post session. Each student will submit a paper,
which explains how his/her photos represent the various aspects of the
culture.
Miscellaneous:
Students with impaired sensory, manual
or speaking skills are encouraged and have the responsibility to contact
their instructor, in a timely fashion, regarding reasonable accommodation
needs.
