COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU102. Piano Class II. 1 hour credit.
Prerequisite: MU101. A continuation of MU101.
CONTACT HOURS:
The class meets for 1 hour, 2 days a
week.
TEXTBOOK:
Piano for Pleasure, Hilley & Olson,
2nd Edition. Keyboard Companion, Hanson House, West Publishing.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course the
intermediate beginner will have completed the requirements for the text.
The student will be required to play for the music faculty for examination
at the end of the semester.
TOPICAL OUTLINE OF UNITS:
Unit I Review all concepts covered in
MU101
Unit II Key Signatures
- Identify all sharp key signatures
- Identify all flat key signatures
- Develop ability to look for the most important music elements essential for sight reading
- Reinforce sight reading by weekly exposure to sight reading examples
- Explain syncopation
- Demonstrate sixteenth notes and variants in division of beats by 4
- Identify triplets and varieties of division of beat by 3
- Technic - Categorize all major scales by fingerings
- Investigate seventh chords
- Classify minor chords versus major chords
- Develop authentic cadences in keys used in repertoire
- Experience learning repertoire from all historical styles
- Learn memorization techniques
- Perform by memory for classmates in preparation for Jury
- Memorize short phrases moving from 8 to 16 measures, etc
- Investigate pieces using Jazz, whole tone scales, and left hands ostinato patterns
Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
- Attendance.
- Monthly evaluations - Repertoire or lesson to be evaluated separately will be assigned at least one week in advance. These evaluations will be given based on the level the student is working. Evaluations will include: (1) students choice of material or activity, (2) teacher's choice, and (3) questions from covered material or sight-reading.
- Final exam will be one piece for memory presented before music faculty.
- Three monthly evaluations 75%
- Final performance 15%
- Attendance 10%
