PIANO CLASS IV

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU104. Piano Class IV. 1 hour credit. Prerequisite: MU103. A continuation of MU103.

TEXT:
No text required. Repertoire determined by the instructor. College piano library available for student usage on checkout basis.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Course objectives are decided on at the beginning of the semester by students needs and interest plus one piece each from Baroque, Classical, Romantic & Contemporary styles. At the completion of the semester students will perform for examination before the combined music faculty.

TOPICAL OUTLINE OF UNITS:
Unit I  Repertoire

  1. The purpose of this unit is to create an interest and appreciation for composers and repertoire from each of the historical periods. The pieces and elements covered are dependent on the students ability and prior training.
  2. The objectives are to broaden the musical understanding of available repertoire while satisfying their individual needs and interest.
Unit II  Technique
  1. The purpose of this unit is to strengthen the students coordination, training both the eye and muscles to respond to the challenges in their repertoire. Methods and instruction is dependent on the students ability and prior training.
  2. The objectives are developed as follows:
  1. Major and minor scales, hands separate or together, number of octaves left to discretion of instructor
  2. Reinforcement of sight-reading principles
  3. Develop exercises to strengthen individual students weaknesses in dexterity.
Unit III Theory
  1. The purpose of this unit is to develop understanding of how music is structured.
  2. The objectives are arranged by analyzing the students strengths and weaknesses in this area and constructing the semesters objectives from this analyzation.
Unit IV Performance
  1. The purpose of this unit is to build the students confidence in sharing what they have learned within this course by confronting the elements of stage fright while developing concentration.
  2. The objectives used are as follows:
  1. Analyzing memorization techniques
  2. Preparation for piano performance classes scheduled six times during the semester.
  3. Developing their ability to work with someone else on ensembles.
  4. Building on their ability to improvise.
  5. Preparation for performance before the music faculty in music juries offered final week.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
The following teaching/learning activities will assist students to achieve course objectives: lecture, instructor led class discussion, keyboard examples by instructor, analysis of student performance, technique assignments, class projects on improvisation and ensembles.

Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Students will be graded as follows:

  1. Weekly grades determined by progress on weekly assignments. 80% (16 @ 5% each)
  2. Those participating in performance classes receive the opportunity to raise any weekly grade by one letter grade.
  3. Experienced students will be graded on their performance before faculty. This grade will be handled as the performance classes (2).
  4. Attendance and attitude 20%.
Miscellaneous:
Students with impaired sensory, manual, or speaking skills are encouraged and have the responsibility to contact their instructor, in a timely fashion, regarding reasonable accommodation needs.
