FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU 105. Fundamentals of Music. 1, 2 or 3 hours credit. A study of the rudimentary skills of music with emphasis on elementary theory, conducting, and performance skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To familiarize the student with the basic language of music, develop ear- training skills and to give them a practical introduction to music performance. The student will also become familiar with the music skills necessary to work with elementary school age children.

UNIT 1 - Time and Sound.
Identifying the basics of time and sound as they relate to pitch, intensity and timbre.

Classifying pitch in relation to Treble, Bass, Tenor, Alto and Grand staffs.
Developing reading skills using ledger lines and ottava signs.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
This course will involve a certain amount of lecture and explanation time. Additionally a significant amount of time will be devoted to in-class activities and performance development.

Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video
materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation
with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator
of learning experiences.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Unit tests will be given. Each unit will contribute 10% of the course grade. In the case of borderline grades, student participation in daily classes and attendance will be the deciding factor. Tests are determined
