COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU 105. Fundamentals of Music. 1, 2 or
3 hours credit. A study of the rudimentary skills of music with emphasis
on elementary theory, conducting, and performance skills.
TEXT:
John Brimhall's Complete Theory Notebook.
Smith's Music for Non-Musicians; 3rd Edition, 1998.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To familiarize the student with the basic
language of music, develop ear- training skills and to give them a practical
introduction to music performance. The student will also become familiar
with the music skills necessary to work with elementary school age children.
TOPICAL OUTLINE OF UNITS:
One credit Hour:
UNIT 1 - Time and Sound.
Identifying the basics of time and sound
as they relate to pitch, intensity and timbre.
UNIT 2 - Music Notation.
Classifying pitch in relation to Treble,
Bass, Tenor, Alto and Grand staffs.
Developing reading skills using ledger
lines and ottava signs.
UNIT 3 - Note and rest values.
Identification of all notes and rests
and their relation to varying time signatures.
UNIT 4 - Time Classification.
Measuring time classification as they
deal with beat and meters.
UNIT 5 - Time Signatures.
Developing the ability to recognize and
understand simple and compound time signatures.
UNIT 6 - Intervals
Recognition of memorize interval structure
and size.
UNIT 7 - Scales.
Identify all basic scales translate sol.
feg symbols as they relate to scales.
UNIT 8- Key Signatures.
Develop students ability to relate major
and minor keys to their signatures.
UNIT 9 - Ear Training.
Special attention will be given to develop
pitch recognition as it relates to matching pitch, whole and half steps,
intervals, scales and tonalities.
UNIT 10 - Terms.
Develop recognition of basic music terminology,
and tempos.
UNIT 11 - Conducting.
Illustration of conducting the basic
beats, with student involvement and evaluations.
UNIT 12 - Intervals.
Explain melodic, harmonic and compound
intervals
UNIT 13 - Scales.
Illustrate whole and half step variations
to major, minor, chromatic, whole tone and pentatonic scale structures.
UNIT 14 - Chords.
Develop structures of major and minor
keys primary chords.
Construct inversions of these chords.
UNIT 15 - Piano.
Preparing students for basic use of the
piano.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
This course will involve a certain amount
of lecture and explanation time. Additionally a significant amount of
time will be devoted to in-class activities and performance development.
Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Unit tests will be given. Each unit will
contribute 10% of the course grade. In the case of borderline grades,
student participation in daily classes and attendance will be the deciding
factor. Tests are determined
0n the following scale:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
0-59% = F
Miscellaneous:
Students with impaired sensory, manual,
