COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU126. Keyboard Accompaniment. 2 hours
credit. Prerequisite: Instructor consent. Techniques in accompanying will
be studied, including the interpretation of the music of different musical
periods as to embellishments and styles, the reading of choral scores
for choir accompanying and simple harmonizations, transpositions, and
modulations of hymns or folk tunes.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course the
student will have worked on developing technique, harmonization, transposition & modulation, compared period literature and styles, while developing
skill in part reading for choral works instrumental accompaniment.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
UNIT I - Techniques
A. Construct major and minor scales
B. Develop fingering concepts
C. Present ornamentation
D. Develop better sight reading
UNIT II - Concepts
A. Develop ability to, harmonize, transpose,
modulate and read notation
from charts
UNIT III - History of vocal solos
A. Present accompaniments from opera,
oratorios, lieder,and Art songs
UNIT IV - Vocal part reading
A. Present single voice lines
B. 3 & 4 part choral reading and
conducting techniques
UNIT V - Instruments
A. Illustrate elements in producing sounds
B. Demonstrate the range of instruments
C. Present problems in tuning string,
woodwind & brass instruments
D. Define transposing instruments
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
The following teaching/learning activities
will assist students to achieve course objectives: lectures, class discussion,
analysis of accompanying situations, student presentations of sight reading
and performance repertoire, transparencies followed by group discussion
and reading assignments.
Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Five written & performance exams
based on unit objectives will contribute 75% of the course grade. The
rest of the grade 25% will be determined by participation in actual accompanying
situations. Exams are criterion referenced and grades are determined by
the following scale: 90% (A), 80% (B), 70% (C), 60% (D). In case of borderline
grades, attendance and attitude will be the determining factor.

Students with impaired sensory, manual

their instructor, in a timely fashion, regarding reasonable accommodation
