COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MU179. Choral Accompaniment Combo I.
1 hour credit. Prerequisite: Department approval. This course serves as
a training and performing opportunity for students interested in functioning
in a combo while working with a choral group. At the completion of this
course the student will identify specific basic components pertaining
to accompanying vocal groups.
TEXTBOOK:
None. Each student will be responsible
for a folder of applicable music in all styles.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course the
student should be able to:
- demonstrate correct combo techniques for different styles used in performing group they are accompanying.
- develop sight reading techniques.
- identify specific basis components pertaining to accompanying choral groups.
- perform various styles of music with confidence and understanding.
At the completion of each unit, the student should be able to:
Unit I-Styles
- differentiate one style of music from another.
- note these differences in instrumentation.
- specify music elements and characteristics.
- apply sighting skills to all styles studied in unit I.
- recite terms used in charts by directors, composers, and editors.
- prepare various musical selections for performance on campus, in community, statewide, and on a national basis.
- demonstrate musical knowledge compiled throughout the semester.
- attend all performances of choral group assigned.
- critique performances from cassettes and video tapes.
- analyze individual and group progress.
Class will meet four times weekly. Classes will be split between class/rehearsal time involving lectures, guest clinicians, tapes, self and group evaluations, and demonstrations; choral/rehearsals at which time choral director will rehearse choral and combo together.
Telecourses: Independent study of audio/video materials augmented by text and study guide; collaboration and participation with class members and faculty via available means. Faculty role is facilitator of learning experiences.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Method of evaluation will include tests,
class participation performance attendance, attitude and effort given.
Other methods may be used at the discretion of the instructor.
Miscellaneous:
Students with impaired sensory, manual
or speaking skills are encouraged and have the responsibility to contact
their instructor, in a timely fashion, regarding reasonable accommodation
needs.
