Advanced Word

Students will learn how to create forms, use customizing features, create a Table of Contents and an Index, and integrate Word with other Microsoft Office 2003 programs.

Basic Access

This workshop will enable the participants to utilize the Access database management software in the Windows environment.   A computerized database management system allows you to store, retrieve, analyze, and print information. Access has the capability to store thousands of pieces of data that can be quickly searched, sorted, and extracted to save time. This workshop will train the participants to utilize the basic features of creating databases in Access and extracting records that meet specific criteria.

Basic Word

Participants will learn how to use helpful features for formatting text, paragraphs, long documents, and newsletters in the Microsoft Word 2003 program.

 "BCC's Counseling & Security Issues and  Virginia Tech"

This workshop will cover the policies and procedures that the Counseling 
staff at Butler follows with clients, as well as, referral information, 
how to deal with troubling students, and other information that may 
help instructors with questions about mental health issues and security 
on the Butler campuses, in light of the Virginia Tech tragedy.

Brain Gym Workshop

The Brain Gym Introduction workshop is for those interested in helping 
their students learn easily  and quickly  with simple, fun, physical 
movements.  Brain Gym makes all types of learning easier.  Participants 
will learn how stress affects learning and how to prepare the brain for 
new learning.

Citing Online Sources

Citing online sources can be confusing and frustrating for both students and instructors. The L.W. Nixon Reference Librarian will review how to cite from such sources as EBSCO, Opposing Viewpoints, and online books in APA and MLA styles. She will show you some shortcuts that will assist your students with citations.

Designing and Developing an Online Course*

So you've taken Introduction to Online Teaching and you want to give the virtual classroom a try. What do you do next?

After speaking with your dean and lead instructor to determine what classes are available you must turn in all the required paperwork to Meg McGranaghan. This online workshop will help you learn the steps to good instructional design. This is a project oriented workshop. You may not enroll in this course unless you have been cleared to teach online by the appropriate dean and lead instructor. When you have completed this course your first unit will be ready to go!

*Successful completion of Introduction to Online Teaching is a prerequisite for registration in this workshop. One face-to-face meeting is required.

Document Cam

This workshop outlines the connection and use of document cameras available now on the Andover and El Dorado campuses, and how this technology can benefit both instructors and students.   Participants will learn how to setup and use the document camera and use it, even in conjunction with laptops or computers , so that students can see detail in print documents (even 3D objects! ) in teaching not possible otherwise.

Graphing Calculators

This hour-long workshop is for math instructors wishing to know more about the
TI-83 calculator (required for College Algebra students). Participants will learn the basic uses of the calculator and learn how to help students become more efficient users for class work.

IDEA Student Rating Form

This time will be spent discussing the new student rating form (IDEA) that will be used beginning in Fall 2007.   Items covered will be a bit of history of the form, how it is administered, what new features you will enjoy in data returned, how the results look, and how this score fits into the overall teacher evaluation score.

Intermediate Word

Students will learn how to format documents with sections and columns, tables, styles, and with headers and footers. They will also learn how to merge form documents, mailing labels and envelopes, and work with charts.

The workshop will include demonstration and active participation.   The participants will learn how to add pictures, sounds,movies, notes pages, footers, hyperlinks, and text boxes.   They will also learn to copy the presentation to a CD and publish it to the Web.

Instructional Design for Student Engagement

Several useful models exist to aid in the planning, implementation and evaluation of instruction. Workshop participants will examine instructional design models and use one to develop instruction to implement in their classroom. Instructors will evaluate the effectiveness of the planned instruction.

Introduction to School Maestro Grade book Program

School Maestro II is a grade book program that supports a wide variety of different grading methods.  The program tracks attendance, does seating charts, records grades, creates reusable lesson plans, tracks GPA, and transcripts.  The program can trace appointments, maintain contact information, and develop a variety of customizable reports such as individual grade lists, class grade sheets, and attendance reports.  The program can also be use to produce fully formatted form letters which may include a customizable letterhead with a logo.  For letters may also be emailed.

Second Generation OWL: Updates and Improvements to the Butler Online Writing Lab

This workshop will update participants to the changes in the Butler OWL (Online Writing Lab), a student tutoring service available via email and the web. Instructors who require written assignments in their classes will receive a brief overview of tutoring theory, a walk-through of the paper submission process, and promotional materials to distribute to classes.

SoftChalk Lesson Builder for Online Instructors Group

Participation in this workshop is currently limited to online instructors. You may access the workshop through the Toolkit course in ANGEL. The workshop is self directed and allows 4 weeks for completion. Participants will use the tools in SoftChalk to develop an interactive unit of instruction for their online course.

Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education

This workshop is based upon the “Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education,” authored by Arthur W. Chickering and Zelda Gamson. Originally published in 1987, these principles and their accompanying suggestions for implementation were a product of decades of research on learning in higher education, and the basic tenets set forth in them are still timely and applicable to teaching today. This is a project oriented course with weekly assignments. Successful completion requires a final project addressing how the participant's thoughts about teaching have changed through the implementation of the principles.
