Instrumental Music Scholarships

Membership in the Concert Band is conditioned primarily on instrumentation needs. The 17 to 19 piece jazz ensemble and the 9 to 10 piece jazz and commercial styles workshop band are selected by audition. A pep band plays for all home football and basketball games. Other ensembles are formed according to student interests.  To register for an audition, you'll need to fill out the online registration form on the Fine Arts and Communication Scholarships page. To prepare for your audition, follow the information below.

For your Audition:

A letter of recommendation from a high school music instructor or private teacher (phone call accepted) is due at time of audition.

  • College band: Scales (for demonstration of range, major or chromatic, student’s choice), solo, etude, or excerpts from ensemble music (for demonstration of lyrical and technical proficiency, (student’s choice); sight-reading (committee’s choice)
  • Jazz Studies Ensembles: Instrumental – Jazz etude or transcribed jazz solo (your choice); sight reading (committee’s choice); optional improvisation on B flat Blues.
  • Drum line and percussionists: Butler is auditioning students for our Drum Line.  All new drums and equipment were purchased for the Fall 2015 season.  To audition, please be prepared to play this percussion audition excerpt. Students may turn in their audition via video to Andy Slater at Video Auditions are due by 10:00 PM on Thursday, May 12th, 2016.

Students should also fill out the Instrumental Music Student Information Form and bring it to on the audition day.
