Sports Media

Practice makes perfect sports reporting; you’ll get plenty of reps at Butler.

If you like to know more than the score and tend to see a story line behind every goal line stand, you may be on your way to a career in Sports Media. Sports reporting has become a growth industry in its own right with dedicated networks, publications and web-based outlets to keep pace with a sports world that is also rapidly expanding.

When you come to Butler to study in our Sports Media courses, you already have an enviable beat to cover with our nationally recognized athletic teams. You will travel with the teams to get the stories and write for our student newspaper, magazine, radio and television stations and our Sports Media Facebook Page. You’ll shoot and edit video, conduct interviews with players, produce post-game shows and have the opportunity to do play-by-play and color commentary for live broadcasts.

Learn from the pros

If it sounds like a lot of fun, that’s only because it is. But the standards we set for our students are high. Each year, we travel to the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Seminar hosted by the Kansas City Royals. Our students submit broadcasts to be critiqued by professional sports reporters. The Kansas Association of Broadcasters has recognized our students many times with awards as has the Kansas Collegiate Media organization for our print stories and photos.

There are a number of Fine Arts and Mass Communication Activity Scholarships available to cover the cost of tuition (equivalent to that paid by Kansas in-county residents) and books, and you don’t have to be a Sports Media major to receive one. So if you want to make it your life’s work to cover the sports world at play or you just love the media, get in the game at Butler and we’ll get you off on the right foot from the very start.
