Transfer Timeline

One Year Before Transferring

As you begin your final year at Butler, consider these points to help you successfully transfer to another institution.

  1. Make a list of and prioritize the characteristics of a four-year university that are important to you. Consider factors such as degrees offered, cost, location, size of student body, co-curricular activities, services for commuter students, distance education opportunities, job placement services, and any other features that are important to you. Do not hesitate to check out several colleges and universities. Just because someone tells you it is a good institution, does not mean that you will have the same perception. Therefore, make sure that the institution offers the features that are important to you!
  2. Based on the information you have gathered, narrow down your potential transfer universities to three top choices. Contact the admissions offices at those universities to arrange a campus visit within the next couple of months. When you visit a campus, make sure that you arrange an appointment with an advisor for your major.
  3. Submit an application for admission to the universities you are considering. Be sure to pay attention to deadlines, application fees, and other required documentation such as transcripts. Make a copy of the completed applications for your records. Many universities require students to be admitted before scholarship applications will be processed, so it is important to apply for admission early!
  4. Begin compiling documentation that may be required when applying for scholarships. Contact instructors and others who can write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Be sure to send them a thank you note. Also begin working on any essays that may be required.
