Vocal Music Scholarship Audition Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in the Vocal Music Department. Auditions for Vocal Music Scholarships may be completed in person or online! Our preference is to see you audition and get to meet you in person.  However, we understand that not all prospective students are available on the same day.  If you cannot attend our in-person auditions for any reason, please let us know at vocalmusic@butlercc.edu!

The Vocal Music Department offers a wide variety of opportunities to sing. Our in-state tuition and books scholarships are in high demand and we encourage all interested students to submit audition materials as soon as possible.  Students do not need to be music majors to receive in-state tuition and books scholarships.

TO PREPARE FOR AN IN-PERSON AUDITION:

1) All students must register for their audition by filling out the online registration form on the Fine Arts and Communication Scholarships page.

2) Prospective students will need to prepare the following musical selections:

  • Short segments of two (2) songs that show off your range and ability in contrasting styles. This is your opportunity to show us your best singing in any style.  Sing something you love!  Students are encouraged to sing one song “a cappella” and one with an accompanist or accompaniment track.  Students may also accompany themselves.
  • Sing the "Star-Spangled Banner" or "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" in any key, a cappella.
  • All students will be asked to participate in a short dance audition at their audition.  It is fun and accessible for all levels of dancers!  You may want to bring some extra clothes you can easily move in for the dance audition.
  • Students should fill out the Vocal Music Student Information Form
  • Students should ask a music teacher to submit the Vocal Music Teacher Recommendation Form.

Students who register for an in-person audition will be sent a schedule approximately one week prior to their chosen audition date.  Please plan to keep the day open for the audition and interview process.  If you have questions about your audition or what to prepare, send an email to vocalmusic@butlercc.edu.

TO PREPARE FOR YOUR VIRTUAL AUDITION:

1) All students must register for their audition by filling out the online registration form on the Fine Arts and Communication Scholarships page.

2) Prospective students will need to record an audition video that includes the following:

  • State your name, high school, and career/college major/goals
  • Sing a short segment of two (2) songs that show off your range and ability in contrasting styles.
  • Any student interested in performing in the Headliners Show Choir must record a short dance call video.  Follow along with Mrs. Mack and our Dance Captains on a short YouTube dance instruction video (https://youtu.be/RD63tDUdBwg) to learn the steps.  Record yourself dancing along and submit it as part of your video audition.
  • Students should fill out the Vocal Music Student Information Form
  • Students should ask a music teacher to submit the Vocal Music Teacher Recommendation Form.

SUBMITTING YOUR VIRTUAL AUDITION:

When your video is completed, please upload your audition to YouTube as an "unlisted" video, and email the link to vocalmusic@butlercc.edu.  If needed, you may be contacted to schedule a Zoom video conference with the Vocal Music Faculty to ask and answer any questions.
