IT Institute Holds Certificate Ceremony

IT Institute Certificate Ceremony
Published: Thursday, May 21st, 2015

Butler Community College’s IT Institute held a certificate ceremony May 7 at Butler of Andover’s 5000 building. Forty-four students earned a total of 64 certificates of completion.

“Last December we awarded 23 students, and this semester we are up to 44 students,” said Dr.Anna Catterson, director of the IT Institute. “I expect to see next semester’s numbers increase as well.”

Keynote speaker for the event was Kenton Hansen, Marketing Director for Balanced Comp, Owner of Go Banana LLC, and Founder of The Labor Party. He is an avid supporter of building and sustaining Wichita business. Hansen also serves on the IT Institute Advisory Board.

“Your education is like a bookshelf,” said Hansen. “It exists, but in those fields of IT development you will have to rapidly grow and develop more skills to put on your bookshelf. And, then with those skills or books, you’ll be able to pull them off of your shelf when you need them.”

The IT Institute was created in 2013 through a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant (TAACCCT). Butler was awarded a 2.6 million dollar grant to provide TAA-eligible displaced workers and veterans an opportunity to re-enter the workforce. The institute opened with the goal of having 400 students by 2016, currently there are 580 students enrolled in the institute.

There are six certificate programs provided by the IT Institute, including Cyber Security & Internetworking Management, Database Administration, Digital Media, Interactive 3D Technologies, Software Development and Windows Administration.
