Alpha Phi Alpha represents Butler with 16 awards

Butler Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter (PTK), Alpha Phi Alpha won 16 awards at regional and international conventions.  

At the regional convention held in Overland Park, Butler’s PTK Chapter brought home the following awards: First place College Project, third place Most Outstanding Chapter, Five Star Chapter, Reach Rewards Chapter, and Channing Bear Chapter. They also received first place for Sister Chapter Award with the Tau Theta Chapter from Labette Community College.  

At the international convention held in Aurora, Colo., Butler’s PTK chapter, which is part of the Kansas-Nebraska Region, earned the Five Star Region Award, Hallmark Excellence Award in Career Readiness, and placed in the top 50 out of more than 1200 chapters in the College Project category.

In addition, the Kansas-Nebraska Alumni Association was awarded the Five Star Alumni Chapter. Butler’s PTK advisor, Chrissy Gifford, also serves as advisor for the Alumni Association. Butler PTK president, Hayden Jansen, and three vice presidents, Ashley Renee, Fiona Bartelli, and Jose Pavilany were recognized as the Distinguished Regional Officer Team.  

Hayden Jansen was also named the New Century Scholar for Kansas and will receive a $2,500 scholarship. He was chosen out of more than 2000 other applicants to represent Kansas for his outstanding accomplishments and activities. New Century Transfer Pathway Scholars are selected based on students’ academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom, only one student is selected from each state.

Individual students and their personal award categories are noted below:  

Brent Tersol of Wichita: First place in Achievement in Literature Award for Creative.   

Bryce Deewall of Augusta: Third place in Achievement in Art Award for Photography.  

McKenna Everhart of Augusta: First place in Achievement in Art Award for Drawing/Painting.

Hayden Jansen of Augusta: First place in Achievement in Art Award for Photography, Alumni Scholarship Award’s recipient, and New Century Scholar and will be recognized May 1, in New York.  

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. The organization was formed in 1918 on the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. Today, PTK recognizes students’ academic success and, through online courses, provides opportunities to develop professionally, earn scholarships, enhance leadership skills, and explore career options.
