Policy Title: Class Recording Policy
Policy Number:
Effective Date: 10/13/2026
Revision Date: 10/13/2026
Division: Academics
Category: Academics
This Policy applies to Butler Community College ("BCC" or the "College") students, faculty, employees, and guests participating in or attending class lectures, discussions, presentations, or other academic events.
Butler Community College recognizes the importance of protecting the privacy of students and instructors, the integrity of the educational environment, and intellectual property associated with course instruction and materials. This Policy establishes requirements governing the recording, livestreaming, transcription, and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence ("AI") tools during class lectures, discussions, presentations, and other academic events while providing for approved disability accommodations.
Butler Community College prohibits the recording, livestreaming, or use of Generative Artificial Intelligence ("AI") tools to generate a transcript of class lectures, discussions, presentations, or other academic events without the advance permission of the instructor presenting or hosting the event to be recorded.
Unless otherwise expressly permitted, permission to record a lecture or other academic event applies exclusively to the student who received permission from the instructor. This restriction does not apply to students who have official accommodations approved through the institution's Office of Disability Service that expressly permit recording as part of an approved accommodation.
In the event permission to record class lectures or other events is granted, the instructor may, but is not required to, notify students and guests in advance that recording may occur. Efforts should be made to protect the confidentiality of students with a disability who are being granted accommodation, and instructors will not identify students recording as a disability accommodation.
All students should be aware that any class, and discussions held therein, may be subject to recording in accordance with this Policy.
Any recording permitted by an instructor may be used only for individual or group study with other students enrolled in the same class, and may not be reproduced, transferred, distributed, or displayed in any other manner.
Permission to allow recording of lectures is not a transfer of any copyrights in the recording or related course materials.
Any information contained in the recorded class may not be posted, published, or quoted without the express consent of the instructor or speaker and, if permission is granted, must be properly cited.
Students must erase recordings at the end of the semester in which they are enrolled in the class.
