Administer medications from antibiotics to narcotics in a healthcare facility. Learn about adverse drug reactions, side effects and protocols for administering certain medications.
As a CMA, you're part of the advocate team to care for those who need varying degrees of assistance. You perform routine care tasks such taking vital signs, assessments and helping CNAs and other facility staff when possible.
In a home setting, you'll become familiar with each resident and notice when they're in pain or ill. As a CMA, you often have the ability to give them medications as needed (PRN) to help them. You report concerns and findings to a nurse and follow individual care plans to do your best in your position.
Understand the importance of RIGHT in drug administration. For each med administered, you need to ensure each RIGHT is checked and accurate before giving or applying. This means you ensure the correct patient, drug, time, dose and route.
We prepare you to take the Kansas Nursing Home Medication Aide certification test. Learn the correct procedures for administering medications, the action of different classes of drugs, how to identify and report side effects or adverse reactions.
Because medication aides sometimes perform Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) duties, you will need a CNA certification to earn your CMA certification.
Renew your CNA or CMA certification through the Kansas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services (KDADS). Successful completion of the course renews your certification on the Kansas Nurse Aide Registry.
You only take one course in this class. An update is offered for expired licensure.
