Butler's Sports Media program was created in 2003 and provides you a unique opportunity for a career in sports coverage. As a Sports Media staff member, you will cover the full scope of our nationally-recognized Butler athletics for the student newspaper, magazine, radio station, television station, and Internet. Sports Media students travel to every game of the football team, women’s basketball team and men’s basketball team, writing print stories, shooting still photos/video, and producing live play-by-play/color radio/television broadcasts. Radio and television coverage also includes post-game shows with the head coaches and feature stories about all aspects of sports. Combining all women’s and men’s sports at Butler, Sports Media students cover over 300 games each year.
With your fellow students, you’ll regularly attend broadcast and print seminars where you can have your work critiqued by professional sports broadcasters. Each year, Butler attends the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Sports Seminar hosted by the Kansas City Royals. Critiques by professionals and advice from broadcasters with the Royals and Chiefs organizations, as well as other media outlets, are an invaluable resource.
Activity scholarships, which cover tuition (equivalent to that paid by Kansas in-county residents) and books, are available each semester for Sports Media staff. You don’t need to be a Mass Communications major to participate or apply for scholarship.
Sports Media students have claimed numerous awards in print from the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press and in broadcasting from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Former writers, photographers, and broadcasters have moved on to the work force, commercial publications, radio/television stations, and four-year schools, some armed with competitive scholarships.
