POW Camp history, Handpan Dan at Life Enrichment

Butler Community College’s Life Enrichment will welcome a presentation by Marcia Sebree about POW camps in Peabody, Kansas, and a performance by Handpan Dan on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 9 a.m. in the Hubbard Welcome Center on the El Dorado campus.

Sebree, president of the Peabody Historical Society, will begin the event at 9 a.m. by sharing information about the German POWs who came to Peabody in the fall of 1943. The POWs helped with the harvest and did other jobs around town. The POWs stayed in Peabody for two years.

Daniel “Handpan Dan” Baird will present the handpan at 10 a.m., a peaceful and soothing instrument invented at the turn of the century. Baird will explore the history of the instrument and discuss how he uses it therapeutically in healthcare, education, and community settings. Baird will offer the opportunity to try the handpan before leaving for the day. 

Life Enrichment meets on the first Tuesday of each month during the school year and features engaging speakers and performers. Guests enjoy coffee and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 9 a.m. in the Clifford/Stone Community Room at the Hubbard Welcome Center. Meetings are free and open to the public. Regular attendees are encouraged to register to receive a monthly newsletter with program details, but new participants are always welcome.
