Press Release
The Butler Community College Theatre Department will present the Off-Broadway classic “The Fantasticks,” with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, November 20-22. Performances will take place at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on November 22.
Featuring classic songs like “Try to Remember” and “Soon It's Gonna Rain,” the musical is loosely based on the play “Les Romanesques” by Edmond Rostand. The original production ran for 42 years beginning in 1960, making it the longest-running show in the history of American theatre.
Butler’s production is directed by Theatre Department Chair Leslie Coates with musical direction by Butler professor Matt Udland. April Thompson served as Director of Design and Head Designer, and Butler professor Caden Runnalls provided technical direction. The production runs one hour and 45 minutes with a 10-minute intermission.
“’The Fantasticks’ is an important part of the American Musical Theatre lexicon,” Coates said. “I am excited for our students to participate in such an iconic piece of poetry and music brought to life on stage.”
