Butler Broadcast Students Earn the Most First Place Awards

Butler students receive 15 awards at Kansas Association of Broadcasters Workshop in Lawrence, Kan.

El Dorado, Kan. – On April 2, Butler Community College students and faculty attended the 2019 Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) Workshop on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, Kan.

Butler students competed against two and four-year colleges, receiving more first place awards than any other college at the event. They also tied with Kansas State University for the second most total undergraduate/intern awards. Over the 22 years the KAB has sponsored a student production competition, Butler has received approximately 90 first place awards, approximately 70 second place awards and approximately 90 honorable mentions for a total of more than 250 awards.

Sponsored by the KAB, the workshop featured panel discussions, table talks and a career fair for students from Kansas high schools and colleges.

Butler Radio (KBTL 88.1 FM) is managed and advised by Keith West who helped lead these students to their success.

The following Butler students received awards, with first and second place winners receiving a custom plaque, and Honorable Mentions awarded certificates:

  • Austin Ashcraft (Valley Center High School / Wichita, Kan.) – Second Place for Research Paper “Extra Credit” in the Undergraduate TV category

 

  • Zeb Campbell (Independence High School / Independence, Kan.) – First Place for DJ Personality “Zeb ‘Soup’ Campbell” in the Undergraduate Radio category; First Place for Entertainment Program “That One Morning Show” in the Undergraduate Radio category; First Place for 60 Second Commercial “Fetch Bar and Grill” in the Intern Radio category; First Place for Hard News Package “Glass Trial” in the Intern Radio category; First Place for Complete News Package “Trump in Topeka” in the Intern Radio category

 

  • Tyler Godwin (Campus High School / Haysville, Kan.) – First Place for Sports Play by Play “Butler Women v Neosho” in the Undergraduate Radio category; Second Place for Sports Play by Play “Butler Men v Cowley” in the Undergraduate TV category

 

  • Madison Marx (Andale High School / Colwich, Kan.) – First Place for Documentary “Military Significant Others” in the Undergraduate Radio category

 

  • Auh’shay Sanchez (Junction City High School / Junction City, Kan.) – First Place for Complete Sports Feature “Bowl Game Special” in the Undergraduate Radio category; Honorable Mention for DJ Personality “DJ Shay Shay Boomin’” in the Undergraduate Radio category

 

  • Zach Schwarzenberger (Conway Springs High School / Conway Springs, Kan.) – First Place for Promotional Audio “Quick Money Tips” in the Undergraduate Radio category; Second Place for Station Promotional Announcement “Math Class” in the Undergraduate Radio category; Honorable Mention for Promotional Video “Butler Music Major Promotional” in the Undergraduate TV category
