Butler Community College Student Publications Win Awards at Collegiate Competition

The Lantern Newspaper, The Grizzly Magazine Bring Home More Than 20 Awards

Another round of awards has been achieved by Butler Community College’s two publications, The Lantern newspaper and The Grizzly Magazine, during the annual Kansas Collegiate Media Conference in Wichita April 7-8.

Over several years, students involved in these publications have brought home countless awards after competing against other two-year publications from around the state. Some of the top awards have been given to Butler students and the 2019 year continues this tradition.

This year The Lantern won Bronze Overall and its staff won first place in Editorial Writing. The staff as a whole also received an honorable mention twice in Page Design. Noah Merrell, editor-in-chief of The Grizzly Magazine, was named, “First Runner-Up Journalist of the Year” and received an accompanying cash award. This placing is one of the highest honors at the conference.

Students were guided to their success by Amy Chastain, The Lantern advisor, and Mike Swan, The Grizzly Magazine advisor.

The following students from The Lantern won 13 awards:

· Caelin Bragg (Home School / El Dorado, Kan.) – First Place in Headline/Artistic Headline Design; Third Place in News/Event Writing; Honorable Mention in Ad Design; Honorable Mention in Feature Photography; Honorable Mention in Review Writing

· Tori Lemon (Maize High School / Wichita, Kan.) – Third Place in Ad Design; Honorable Mention in Column Writing

· Taylor Garcia (Mulvane High School / Mulvane, Kan.) – Honorable Mention in Sports Photography

- Matthew Will (Wichita Northwest High School / Wichita, Kan.) – Honorable Mention in Sports News Writing; Honorable Mention in Sports Photography

· Rachel McClurg (Maize South High School / Maize, Kan.) – two Honorable Mentions in Front Page Design

· Sophia Allen (Andover Central High School / Andover, Kan.) Honorable Mention in Column Writing

The following students from The Grizzly Magazine won five awards:

· Noah Merrell (Eisenhower High School / Goddard, Kan.) – First Runner-Up Journalist of the Year; Second Place for Feature Design in the Magazine/Yearbook Division

· Kaylee Stout (Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School / Valley Center, Kan.) – First Place for Feature Photography in the Magazine/Yearbook Division

· Nicolas Quinones (Wichita South High School / Wichita, Kan.) – Honorable Mention for Headline Design in the Magazine/Yearbook Division

· Keandra Rovaris (Wichita Northeast Magnet High School / Wichita, Kan.) – Honorable Mention for Copyediting amongst all schools
