Butler Hosting Advance Kansas Teen Camp

Butler Community College is hosting an Advance Kansas Teen Camp for area high school sophomores and juniors on July 29, 30 and 31. Thirty-two teens from 16 Butler and Sedgwick County high schools are expected to attend.

The camp will feature activities focused on diversity awareness, team building, bullying prevention and college preparation; and will include two mornings on Butler’s Grizzly Adventures Challenge Course. Modeled after Advance Kansas, a diversity leadership initiative established for adults in 2008, the camp is designed to help students experience and gain a greater awareness and appreciation of diversity. At the same time, college leaders hope the opportunity to experience campus life will inspire campers to think about returning to Butler as college students.

Camp will begin on July 29 at the Butler of Andover campus located at 715 E. 13th St. in Andover and move to Butler of El Dorado later that day where campers will stay two nights in the residence halls. On the third day, campers will move back to the Andover campus for closing presentations during which they will share creative messages that teams of campers developed and produced to communicate something meaningful they learned during Teen Camp.

Students participating in Teen Camp are entering their sophomore or junior year of high school this fall. This is the first year for this program which is being piloted with funding granted to Butler for this purpose by the former Diversity Kansas organization when it ceased to exist.
