The E.B. White Gallery of Art 2022-2023 season to feature art works with inspiring definitions

The E.B. White Gallery of Art is pleased to announce the opening of the 2022-2023 season. The Gallery hosts three different shows each semester which run for nearly a month. The second exhibition features Barbara Waterman-Peters and Larry Peters. It is open on Sept. 29 - Oct. 28, with an artist reception on Thursday October 20 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Visit the Erman B. White Gallery free of charge Monday - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., or Friday 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Barbara Waterman-Peter's art symbolizes the current time of chaos and disunity, including the crisis we face such as climate change, immigration issues, economic problems, racial strife, a drug epidemic, gun violence, terrorism, and now, a pandemic. She illustrates how every day brings new examples of pulling apart of our structure in the ever-changing atmosphere and loud voices calling for solutions.

“My Ship of Fools and Tumult Series explores the issue of how we are coping; whether we are ignoring the situation, denying it, or trying to act," said Waterman. "We are all in the same boat. I am utilizing many sources from mythology, literature, documentaries, and our own modern culture. While dark humor is sometimes present, apocalyptic overtones prevail.”

Larry Peter’s work utilizes his signature mixed media. The mixed media collages are tied to the Holocaust, even works not titled within the subject are visually related by using a similar palette. The inspiration for some of this work comes from readings on the Holocaust. His materials range from powdered graphite, paint sticks, paint, found metal, abrasive papers to roofing felt. He usually works on supports such as panels, canvas, or paper.

“I have responded to current events with my series on Ukraine," said Peters. "In addition, I am exploring interpretations of the work of one of my favorite artists, Arshile Gorky. My ceramic work draws inspiration from several sources, most notably Japanese, but New Mexico has also had influence.”

The Erman B. White Gallery of Art provides the opportunity to experience a diversity of art mediums of distinctive visual expression. Exhibits include paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, architecture, handcrafted jewelry, and photography by both regional and national artists.

The Gallery is located in the Fine Arts 700 Building on the Butler of El Dorado campus.
