Carey Chesire from Andover Middle School won the Sunflower State Spelling Bee on March 23 held in Salina at Kansas Wesleyan University. Chesire competed as one of nearly 100 elementary and middle school students.

Chesire, an eighth-grade student who qualified for the State Bee by winning the Butler County Spelling Bee in February, correctly spelled the word “ahuehuete.” The ahuehuete, a cypress tree, is the national tree of Mexico and grows from Southern Texas to Guatemala.

Chesire said the State Bee was “stressful, but fun.” He is excited to represent Kansas at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May. “I’m excited,” he said. “I think I can do well.”

Since his win in the Butler County Spelling Bee, Chesire says he prepared quite a bit for the State Bee. “I looked at notes, practiced online and recited words with my parents,” he said.

The Bulter County Spelling Bee is hosted annually by Butler Community College. The Sunflower State Spelling Bee is hosted annually by the Kansas Press Association.
